| | I needed a longer run today but it was too cold to carry water without it freezing so I opted for loops around Liberty to take advantage of the spring water fountain. Ran to the park, ran 9 loops, ran home. Was planning on 1 more loop but I was freezing so I cut it short. This was a mentally exhausting run. I didn't wear a watch but it felt like it took forever.

| | 20 miles 'round and 'round the Olympic Oval at the Revolution Run. 73 running laps+ 2 more walking as a cooldown for 75 total laps. Planned this as a training run for Surf City so I could practice fueling and test clothing options. Pace was pretty slow but I accomplished my goal. Thankful that a friend ran 68 laps with me. This was definitely a mental toughness test.

| | Attempted to skate ski for the first time since 2011. I'm still absolutely awful. I made it about 2 miles. I'm contemplating selling my skis because I dion't think I'll ever put in the time needed to get proficient and actually enjoy skiing.

| | Needed to get one last long run in before Surf City in 2 weeks. Given the crap air in SLC, I decided to head down to St George and run the half. Ran a 4.5 mile warmup, ran the half in 1:52:40, then cooled down back to the hotel. Weather was beautiful with sunny blue skies and clean air. St George is becoming one of my favorite places to run. This went much better than I anticipated. Really torn about what pace to target for the marathon now as it appears I'm in better shape than I thought.

| | Went to Pipeline to get a trail run in. It was gorgeous out, the snow was nicely packed, and we were above the nasty air. Unfortunately Nate sprained his ankle badly 2 miles in so we had to turn around and walk 2 miles back to the car.

Winter Series 5k (3.107 Miles) 00:24:30 | | Warmup with Vanessa., 5k in 24:30 (by my watch, 24:37 gun time), cool down with Vanessa. Not bad at all considering I rarely run under 9 minute miles anymore and haven't done any speed work since summer. Splits were all pretty consistent around 7:53. It's been awhile since I ran sub 8s on a non-aided coourse.
Looking back, I ran this race about 1 minute faster than 2012 (didn't run last year). I didn't run the miles that I wanted to in 2013, but I worked on my strength and core and it seems to be paying off. I'm really enjoying running right now and I'm running better lately than I have in several years. Looking forward to the rest of 2014!

| | Ran the Winter Series 10k as my first run since the marathon lat Sunday. Legs were super heavy and stiff at first, but loosened up after a few miles.Took it pretty easy and ran very even splits, even with the headwind on the way back. Glad the rain held off. Feels good to be running again.

Panicked a bit when I started seeing 7:xx miles, but held it together. My downhill running is improving. I'm excited to to see what I can do once I start consistently doing speedwork again.

Salt Lake City Half (13.1 Miles) 01:49:20 | | Super happy with this race. I haven't run under 1:50 since 2009 when I left sea-level so that was the big goal for today. I wasn't sure if I could do it on this course, but I wanted to try. I generally don't wear my garmin for important races because I know that the miles never match up. Not thinking, I wore mine today and for the first 8 miles or so I was only focusing on my average pace and not paying attention that my miles were recording way before the race markers. I thought I was running 1:47-1:48 pace easily. Then the 1:50 pacer went by me. I thought "oh, he's going way too fast." At mile 10 I was able to do the math, and I realized that he wasn't too fast and that if I really wanted to break 1:50, I had to pick it up. It hurt, but somehow I managed to pick it up to the finish. After the race, I walked back to Liberty Park and ran a 2 mile cooldown home along the marathon route. I thought it would pump me up for Utah Valley, but it really just reminded me how much the marathon hurts!

| | This was just awful. Weather looked sketchy so I decided to do 11-12 loops of Liberty for my long run. After 5.5 slow loops I was bored and wanted to quit. But since nothing hurt and my pace was actually increasing, I continued on. Things really fell apart on the last 2 loops. Major stomach issues. I quit running a 1/2 loop earlier than planned and had to stop and sit down a few times on the walk to my car because I was so queasy. Glad this one is over. Every time I try to do more than 4 loops of Liberty, it goes badly.

| | Started at Millers and climbed for what seemed like forever. Stomach was better today (thanks to Zantac), but my back has been killing me. This route had way more steep up and down than I wanted. That's what I get for trail running with Nate, Carrie, and Jim. Their idea of a recovery day is only 3,000 ft of vertical! At least the views of SLC were amazing.

Provo City 5k (3.107 Miles) 00:24:08 | | I'm really disappointed with this one. I fully expected to run around 23:15 so it was disheartening to see 24 in the results. I wish I could provide splits and analyze what went wrong, but I was halfway to Provo when I realized that I had no watch or garmin or any sort of time keeping device. So I ran by feel and I felt like I was working really hard. By halfway, my stomach was revolting and I just wanted to walk. I don't know if I went out too fast or if it just wasn't my day.
But given the week I've had, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. After struggling with stomach issues for over a week and 1/2, I saw a doctor and learned that I have problems with excess stomach acid. Luckily there is a pill for that, so my stomach has steadily been getting better, but it's still not right. I've also had bad back pain since Tuesday. Even with a few days off, it wasn't getting better and I aggravated it on Thursday's run. I was considering skipping this race, but I got a massage on Friday night, popped a few aleve, and decided to give it a try. I don't feel like my back was the reason for my poor performance, though.
I know I'm in better shape than this so I'm writing it off as a bad day. I've had a string of good races (for me), so I guess I was due for a bad one.

| | This was a completely miserable run. I had my husband drop me off at Mountain Dell golf course with the plan to run down Emigration, then Sunnyside, on to Liberty Park, then home. The first 2 miles or so were pleasant. I settled into a slow, but steady pace on the climb. But when I turned onto the canyon road, I was hit in the face with a serious wind. Like Wyoming windy. And the wind was relentless, it basically didn't stop until I hit Liberty. My pace running downhill was so slow because of the wind and it felt so hard. By the time I reached the zoo at mile 12, I was mentally drained. I was so sick of fighting the wind. I had a breakdown, started crying, and did a walk of shame down Sunnyside. Then I basically alternated running with feeling sorry for myself and walking the rest of the way home. I stopped at Cafe Espresso for a huge iced latte to soothe myself and walked the last bit home. So glad this week is over.

| | Still trying to make sense of the back issues. I've been seeig a sports chiropractor and will also see an orthopedic doctor on Wednesday. I am visiblly tilted, my right hip is higher than my left. X-rays are showing "mild spondylosis" and some slight spine curvature. I'm trying to make sense of what all this means and if there is a way to salvage Utah Valley. Right now, I don't see how it's possible.

| | Saw an orthopedic doc today about my back. She doesn't think it is as concerning as the chiropractor. She disagrees that I have spondylosis. However, both do not think I will do further damage if I continue to run. Also saw a PT and have some basic core exercises to do daily.
The pain finally lessened enough that I could get my nornal 5 in, but it was hard and there was still some pain. Still holding out hope for UtahValley, although the goal will change from PR to just finish.

Crack of Dawn 8k (4.97 Miles) 00:36:40 | | I cut my run short yesterday because my back was acting up again. It felt okay when I woke up so I decided to run. Race splits according to Garmin were 7:21, 7:22, 7:34, 7:24, 7:00 for the last .89 (7:50ish pace). My garmin read short but I don't know if that is because the course actually is short or if there were signal problems in the canyon. I felt really good except the last 1/2 mile when my stomach started to revolt. Since the end of April, I've hardly done any running faster than 10 minute pace so it was nice to run a little faster. My downhill running has improved in the last year, but I felt like my turnover was a limiter today.
Since this course is so aided, I don't really know what this means fitness wise, but it was fun. My goal was to run faster than I averaged on the downhill miles of the Emigration 10 back in April before my back issues started and I did so I'm happy.

Vancouver USA Half (13.1 Miles) 01:49:49 | | I was supposed to run the Utah Valley marathon this weekend, but when the opportunity to go to Portland/Vancouver for the weekend came up, I made the decision to bail on the race. I had missed a few long runs because of back pain and mentally wasn't invested in running a marathon anyway. The friend we were visiting was running the Vancouver marathon, so I decided to do the half.
I had no idea what I was capable of running, so I decided to see how the first mile went and go from there. I think I got a little too excited as my first mile was 7:58. This is PR pace for me and I had not done PR training. I should have immediately backed off, but in my excitement, I didn't want to "waste" an opportunity at sea level and I had delusions of PRing in the half for the first time in years. I also somehow believed that the course was flat, but it was fairly rolling through the early miles. I felt strong through mile 6, but the only big climb on the course around halfway just wiped me out. My legs felt so heavy. I had planned to pick it up at mile 10, but by then I was running into rain and a headwind and had nothing left. Each mile just got slower from there. I managed to pick it up in the last half mile to barely finish under 1:50. Garmin splits (started it late, so the time is off).
Looking back, I wish I would have run smarter as I think a 1:47-1:48 was possible for me, but I blew it by trying to PR when I wasn't in shape for that. Vancouver did a nice job with this race. I really liked the course and the 55 degree overcast weather was almost perfect (minus the wind at the end).

| | I went down to Provo to run the Blue Skies for Amber 5k fun run. She died base jumping and her family put on a race to benefit the Utah Food Bank. I used to work with her brother so I decided to run this. It was on the Rock Canyon trail. The course was an out and back and climbed 1000 ft on the way out. I think my time was 40 minutes. Definitely my slowest 5k ever. It was technical in spots so I was very cautious on the way down. It was a pretty trail and great day to be running.

Really struggled on this. Came no where near tempo pace, more like MP. Splits of 8:01, 8:31, 8:35. I don't think the first was really 8:01. My effort felt consistent and my garmin was jumping all over on that one. Pace was anywhere from 7:50 to 9:45. Fell asleep mentally a bit on the 3rd one which is why it was slower.

Snow Canyon Half Marathon (13.1 Miles) 01:48:09 | | Completely unexpected result today. Most of my runs have been very slow, so I thought 1:55-2:00 would be about all I could do. There was also a crazy headwind, so I figured that would slow me down a bit, too. I decided to run by feel and not pay much attention to my watch. I have it set so that it does not alert me to my mile splits while running, so I really had no idea what pace I was doing. At mile 6, I looked at my average pace and saw it was 8:06. What?!? So I made the decision that I was going to keep pushing. Around mile 7, the wind seemed to get worse, the downhills were less steep, my pace was slowing and it was starting to get hard. My average pace slowed a lot during mile 8, but mentally, I was committed to trying not to slow down anymore. The rolling hills through Entrada were tough, but I felt pretty strong and was able to keep my pace. I passed a lot of people in the last 3 miles, and was super happy to finish in 1:48. Splits

| | Finished the year off with the Beat the New Year 5k. Ran about 8:30 pace. It was very cold and parts of the course were icy. Great end to the year, though. Bring on 2015!
